Core lesson

1. How medical words are built

Many terms contain a prefix, a root or combining form, and a suffix. The root usually points to a body part or core concept. A prefix changes location, speed, amount, or quality. A suffix often identifies a condition, process, or procedure. Break an unfamiliar word into pieces, define each piece, and then rebuild the meaning in plain language.

2. High-value prefixes

Learn brady- (slow), tachy- (fast), hypo- (low or below), hyper- (high or excessive), dys- (difficult or abnormal), a- or an- (without), peri- (around), intra- (within), sub- (below), poly- (many), and oligo- (few). Do not assume every medical word behaves perfectly; use the word parts as clues and verify unfamiliar terms.

3. High-value roots and suffixes

Useful roots include cardi/o, pneum/o, pulmon/o, neur/o, gastr/o, hepat/o, nephr/o, hemat/o, oste/o, my/o, derm/o, cephal/o, thorac/o, and abdomin/o. Useful suffixes include -itis, -emia, -osis, -pathy, -pnea, -algia, -megaly, -uria, and -cyte. The goal before class is recognition, not memorizing a dictionary.

4. Directional and position language

Anterior/posterior, superior/inferior, medial/lateral, proximal/distal, superficial/deep, unilateral/bilateral, prone/supine, and anatomical position let providers describe findings precisely. “Pain on the outer part of the right lower leg” can become “pain along the lateral right lower leg.” Clear language improves handoffs and documentation.

5. Abbreviations require caution

Abbreviations save time but may be ambiguous. Learn common course-approved abbreviations, but write plainly when confusion is possible. Never invent abbreviations. In documentation, distinguish what the patient reports, what another person reports, and what you observe.
