Decode medical language instead of memorizing every word

1. Medical words are built in pieces
Medical terminology becomes easier when you stop treating every term as a separate vocabulary item. Many words are assembled from reusable parts.
A combining vowel—often o—may connect a root to another root or suffix. In cardiology, cardi refers to the heart, o connects the parts, and -logy means study of.
A five-step decoding method
- Look at the suffix first.
- Find the root or roots.
- Identify any prefix.
- Translate each part into plain language.
- Rebuild the meaning in a natural order and check the clinical context.
2. Learn word families, not isolated lists

Do not assume that knowing the word part gives you enough information to diagnose or treat a patient. Terminology helps you understand communication; assessment and context determine what the word means for a particular patient.
3. Use anatomical language to remove ambiguity
Position
Supine means lying face up. Prone means lying face down. Fowler position generally describes an upright or semi-upright posture.
Direction
Anterior/posterior, superior/inferior, medial/lateral, and proximal/distal describe relationships between structures.
Sides and planes
Right and left refer to the patient’s sides. Sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes describe how the body can be divided.
Example: “A laceration is on the lateral surface of the right forearm, distal to the elbow” is more precise than “the cut is on the outside of the arm.” Precise language helps another clinician visualize the finding without seeing it.

- Medial right ankle
- Posterior neck

4. Treat abbreviations as controlled shorthand
EMS uses abbreviations, but abbreviations can be misunderstood. Learn the abbreviations used by your program and agency, write them clearly, and never guess when the meaning could change patient care.
- Chief complaint (CC): the main reason the patient needs help, often stated in the patient’s own words.
- Signs and symptoms (S/S): objective findings and subjective experiences.
- History (Hx): past or current information relevant to the patient.
- Loss of consciousness (LOC): a period when the patient was not conscious; context and duration matter.
- Shortness of breath (SOB): commonly used, but plain language may be clearer in some communication.
Pronunciation also matters. Break long words into syllables, say them slowly, and verify unfamiliar terms using a trusted dictionary. Clear communication is more important than sounding impressive.
5. Expand your high-frequency word-part bank

Build flashcards in both directions. One side should ask for the meaning of the word part; another card should give the meaning and ask you to produce an example. This prevents simple recognition from being mistaken for recall.
6. Notice how grammar changes medical words
Medical terms often come from Greek and Latin, so plural forms may not follow everyday English patterns. Examples include diagnosis/diagnoses, vertebra/vertebrae, and bronchus/bronchi. You do not need to memorize every plural before class, but recognize that an unfamiliar ending may indicate more than one structure.
Adjectives also change form. Abdomen is a noun; abdominal describes something related to the abdomen. Thorax becomes thoracic. Crane is not the same as cranial; careful spelling matters.
When reading a question, identify whether it asks for a structure, a process, a location, or a condition. The suffix often provides that clue. For example, -al often means “pertaining to,” while -itis suggests inflammation and -ectomy indicates surgical removal.
7. Translate between patient language and medical language
Patients may say “my heart is racing,” “I feel like I cannot get air,” or “my sugar is crashing.” The EMT listens to the patient’s own description, clarifies what it means, and then communicates findings precisely. Do not replace the patient’s words too early with a diagnosis.
Two-language practice
Patient statement: “The room started spinning when I stood up.” A clear clinical description might include sudden dizziness after standing, time of onset, associated nausea, balance, weakness, speech, and vital signs. It should not automatically become “stroke” or “vertigo” without assessment.
Good documentation separates quotation from interpretation. Use quotation marks for a meaningful exact statement and objective terms for what you observe.
Build the meaning before revealing it
- Tachycardia: identify the prefix and root.
- Hypothermia: identify the prefix and base concept.
- Periorbital: identify the location.
- Intranasal: identify the route or location.
