Start with a timed practice exam
Take a free domain-weighted EMT practice test (20, 40, or 60 questions), then study the content areas you missed.
How the cognitive exam is organized
The National Registry EMT cognitive exam covers six major content areas. EMSCodeSim groups free practice tools under each area so you can study weak topics deliberately instead of only taking random quizzes.
| NREMT content area | What to practice here |
|---|---|
| Airway, Respiration & Ventilation | Breath sound center, lung sound simulator, airway quiz questions |
| Cardiology & Resuscitation | CPR training center, pulse trainer, cardiology quiz questions |
| Trauma | Trauma learning center, patient scenarios, Rule of Nines, trauma quiz questions |
| Medical | Medication learning center, ABC learning center, glucose simulator, medical quiz questions |
| Obstetrics & Gynecology | APGAR simulator, OB/GYN quiz questions |
| EMS Operations | protocol drill, skill sheets, operations quiz questions |
A practical four-week review plan
Week 1 — Assessment foundations
Review scene size-up, primary assessment, SAMPLE/OPQRST, and vital signs. Use the ABC center and full vitals practice daily.

Rotate asthma, stroke, hypoglycemia scenarios and breath-sound recognition. Take the daily EMT quiz and study missed topics.
Week 3 — Trauma & operations
Practice trauma scenarios, splinting logic, hemorrhage/shock concepts, consent/refusal, and documentation with the PCR narrative coach.
Week 4 — Mixed review & psychomotor alignment
Take a timed practice exam, use today’s 5-minute practice, repeat weak flashcards, and walk through official skill sheets before your practical exam.
