Important: National Registry certification is not the same as state licensure. Your state may have separate education, deadlines and renewal steps. This independent EMSCodeSim guide is not affiliated with or endorsed by NREMT. Always follow the current requirements shown in your official NREMT account.

1. How many CE hours do I need?

NREMT's National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) divides qualifying education into National (50%), Local/State (25%) and Individual (25%) components. The applicable 2025 NCCP national topic model must also be satisfied.

LevelNationalLocal / StateIndividualTotal

EMT20101040
AEMT2512.512.550
Paramedic30151560

National component

Complete the specific national topics required for your certification level. Airway, cardiovascular care, trauma, medical emergencies and operations may be represented; the exact distribution varies by level and NCCP version. Total hours alone are not proof that every required topic is satisfied. Check the official NCCP topic breakdown.

Local or state component

Complete approved education that addresses local system needs, state rules, medical director priorities or regional protocols. When no local topics are specified, consult NREMT rules for allowable education.

Individual component

Choose eligible EMS-related education to address personal learning needs. Examples include clinical assessment, pediatric emergencies and advanced airway management, where appropriate for the certification level.

2. Step-by-step renewal process

  1. Sign in: Open My NREMT and check your credential, expiration date, contact information and application eligibility.
  2. Verify your affiliation: Check agency information. Clinicians not currently using EMS skills may need to select inactive status.
  3. Review your transcript: Compare entered and imported continuing education against national topics and component requirements.
  4. Complete missing CE: Take qualifying courses within the applicable certification cycle and retain completion documentation.
  5. Assign hours: Place education into appropriate components and topics; do not double-count the same credit.
  6. Submit the application: Complete required declarations, review details and pay the current NREMT fee.
  7. Obtain verification: Active renewal may require authorized agency or medical director verification, depending on level.
  8. Confirm approval: Monitor pending actions, audit notices and your updated certification expiration date. Submitting is not the same as approval.

3. Deadlines that matter

EventEMT / AEMT / ParamedicEMR
CE renewal opensOctober 1April 1
Exam application deadlineMarch 25September 24
ExpirationMarch 31September 30
Late application windowApril 1–30October 1–31

Dates refer to your expiration year. A late CE application may incur an additional fee; CE completed after expiration cannot be used for that expired cycle. Never assume a late application extends authorization to practice. Check current dates and reinstatement rules.

4. What education qualifies?

Qualifying CAPCE-accredited or state-accepted EMS education, eligible EMS academic coursework and certain standardized certification courses may count. Online education can qualify, subject to content and acceptance rules. Duty shifts, clinical rotations, preceptor time, duplicate education and unrelated training should not be assumed to count. Teaching eligible EMS content may qualify under specific instructor-credit rules. Keep records for potential audit. Explore CAPCE.

5. Renew by examination instead

Eligible clinicians can choose recertification by examination. Apply during the designated window, pay the fee, schedule and pass the applicable exam. The examination pathway generally provides one attempt. Passing initially results in inactive status until applicable active-status requirements are met. If unsuccessful, CE renewal may remain possible only if its requirements are completed before expiration. Consult the official handbook before selecting this route.

6. Active, inactive and lapsed certification

Active: For clinicians using EMS skills with appropriate affiliation and verification. Inactive: Preserves national certification for eligible clinicians not currently practicing; it does not authorize practice. Returning to active status requires the applicable process. Lapsed: After the renewal and reinstatement windows close, follow NREMT's level-specific process to regain certification; it may involve education, examination and other documentation.

7. Plan your two-year cycle

Start early: target roughly 25% of CE in the first six months, 50% by the first year, 80% by month 18, and finish before the application deadline. Review national topic gaps periodically rather than tracking only total hours. This schedule is a planning suggestion, not an NREMT requirement.

8. Personal renewal checklist

Check off steps as you complete them. Your progress is stored only in this browser; EMSCodeSim does not submit a renewal application or sync with NREMT.

9. Frequently asked questions

Does NREMT renewal renew my state license?

No. Verify your state license requirements independently, including dates, fees and CE topics.

Can I complete all CE online?

Qualifying online education can count. Check each provider and course against current NREMT and state requirements.

Can I count a course twice?

No. Eligible hours may be assigned where allowed, but the same credit cannot be counted twice.

Does CPR count?

Some qualifying CPR and standardized certification education may count within NREMT rules. Verify the accepted hours and topic allocation.

What if my renewal is pending?

Check the My NREMT dashboard for outstanding agency verification, audits, returned applications or payment issues. Submission alone does not mean approved renewal.

What if I miss the deadline?

Review the limited late-application period and level-specific regaining-certification procedures in the official handbook. Do not assume you may continue practicing on an expired credential.

10. Free online EMS continuing education

These links help you find no-cost EMS education. Free access does not automatically mean free CE credit, and course availability may change. Verify the specific course's current CAPCE or state EMS approval, credit hours, topic eligibility and certificate cost before starting.

11. How to import CAPCE credits into NREMT

CAPCE-accredited providers report qualifying course completions to CAPCE. The National Registry provides an import feature so you can transfer available CAPCE records into your NREMT transcript instead of retyping each course. Importing is not the same as submitting or approving your recertification application.

Follow these steps in My NREMT

  1. Open My NREMT and sign in with your own account.
  2. Choose My Certification if your account has a role selector.
  3. Open Transcript (sometimes called your Professional Transcript).
  4. Select Import CAPCE Courses or the CAPCE Import function.
  5. Review the available course list. Check the box next to each eligible course you want to transfer; review additional pages of results if shown.
  6. Choose Import My Courses to complete the transfer.
  7. Return to your transcript. Confirm each course's title, completion date and credit hours; check for duplicate entries.
  8. Open Manage Education or your recertification application to confirm that credits were allocated to the right NCCP topics and components. Adjust the assignment if needed and permitted.
  9. Complete any remaining requirements, submit your renewal application and monitor its official status.

What happens to the NCCP categories?

The updated CAPCE import tool automatically maps imported credits to eligible NCCP topic areas. According to the National Registry's 2025/2026 update, it assigns a course to a single national topic first, then may allocate remaining credits to the local/state and individual components when appropriate. You can review and, where permitted, edit these assignments. Always check the final topic breakdown; a course appearing in your transcript does not guarantee all renewal requirements are met.

CAPCE course missing? Troubleshooting

  1. Allow reporting time. Education providers report completion records to CAPCE; records may not appear immediately. CAPCE requires reporting at least every 30 days.
  2. Check your NREMT number. Verify the course provider recorded the correct NREMT certification number, expiration date and clinician details. Incorrect identifiers are a common cause of missing imports.
  3. Contact the course provider. Ask whether the completion was reported to CAPCE and request correction or resubmission if needed.
  4. Ask CAPCE for assistance. If your course was reported but still cannot be imported, use CAPCE's missing-record guidance.
  5. Keep documentation. Retain the completion certificate. If you need to enter a course manually, follow NREMT instructions, verify eligibility and avoid later importing a duplicate.

Import questions

Do I need a separate CAPCE login to import courses?

The official transfer process starts in your NREMT account under Transcript → Import CAPCE Courses. Follow the instructions there; you do not need to start by uploading a CAPCE file to EMSCodeSim.

Are CAPCE courses automatically added to my NREMT account?

Providers report course records to CAPCE, but you should use the CAPCE import function to select and import available records and verify the results. Do not assume a completed course has been transferred or allocated correctly.

Can I use credits for my state license too?

State acceptance and renewal processes vary. Importing a CAPCE record into NREMT does not itself renew your state license.

Privacy: EMSCodeSim does not access your CAPCE or NREMT account, collect certification numbers or import course records on your behalf. This is an instructional guide for the official NREMT portal.
